Kirklees Walking

Walking for Health

A programme of health walks designed to encourage local people into regular walking. All walks are led by trained Volunteer Walk Leaders and are suitable for all ages, abilities and fitness levels. Particular encouragement is given to those who are inactive and are looking to introduce gentle low-impact exercise as part of their lifestyle. There are many benefits to walking regularly such as improving physical and mental wellbeing, creating opportunities to meet new people and build friendships as well as appreciating the beauty of local areas and getting some fresh air. Yorkshire Sport Foundation

Active Partnership

A Lottery-funded charity supporting organisations across the nine districts of South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. It is one of 43 Active Partnerships across England who work with partners to create the conditions for an active nation, using the power of sport and physical activity to transform lives. Over a quarter of the population are inactive, so as a charity, Yorkshire Sport Foundation works closely with partners to help individuals and communities overcome barriers and build healthy habits for life. They connect, influence and provide support for sport and physical activity, increasing and improving the many ways people can take part and get active. Some of the activities include 50+ classes, bowls, curling, chair-based exercises as well as walking basketball and walking football to name but a few.

Leeds

Leeds – Gildersome Health Walks

Walking for Health

Free, guided health walks organised in and around Gildersome in Leeds, offering a great opportunity for local people to get outdoors, get active as well as meet new people. All walks are friendly, welcoming and suitable for those new to walking, have been inactive for some time, recovering from injury or living with a long term health condition (such as arthritis) as they are more of an amble rather than a ramble. The walking routes based in Gildersome take about an hour to complete, but also have a 30 minute option available. The Volunteers Walk Leaders provide encouragement, support and make sure no one gets left behind. There’s no need to book, simply turn up (with a comfortable pair of shoes) on the day to join in. Age UK Leeds

A local independent charity working in the community to support older people, their families and carers for over 40 years. They encourage everyone to love later life and with dedicated staff and volunteers they are able to deliver many different services, ongoing social activities and events across Leeds to help people stay independent, healthy and safe. Activities and events include; A weekly Walking Group among others. Age UK Leeds volunteers also support the city-wide Falls Prevention Exercise Classes across Leeds. Wakefield District Health Walks

Walking for Health

Coordinated by the Health Improvement Team within Wakefield Council, Wakefield District Health Walks organise free regular short walks lasting between 20 minutes to 2 hours and are aimed at people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels. Walking is one of the easiest ways to increase physical activity, get fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle. There is no need pre book, simply turn up (with comfortable shoes and clothing suited to weather conditions) on the day and join in! All walks are led by at least one trained Volunteer Walk Leader providing encouragement and ensuring no one gets left behind.
